Dryer Vent Cleaning - Is it really important?

Could your dryer vent be creating a fire hazard for your family?

By Arianna Dabu, Macaroni KID Fort Myers - Fort Myers Beach March 25, 2023

I recently had a new roof installed, and what better to check on the safety of my home than getting my dryer vent cleaned! Dryer vent cleaning, you say? I didn't even know there was such a thing! Well, I'm here to attest to it being a necessity for the safety of your family and your home!

I was searching for a reputable dryer vent cleaning company that was locally owned, had great references, and wasn't one of those scam posters on Facebook. I finally came across several good reviews for Luke Rodrigues' Dryer Vent Cleaning services - he is licensed and insured in Lee County, so, I figured I'd give him a call to inquire about services.

Luke is a very professional, communicative, and knowledgeable young man. He is not a jack of all trades, but a master of one - dryer vent cleaning! Prior to his three years of professional dryer vent cleaning, Luke and his father ran an IT store for a decade. Luke originally wanted to be in the healthcare industry: an EMT, firefighter, nurse, etc. In fact, he has many friends in the industry! He quickly found out that this wouldn't work well for him, due to the fear of drawing blood. So, Luke started going to school, which consumed most of his time. One day, he was approached by a friend to help clean a few dryer vents, and he was hooked! He realized just how important it was for homeowners and renters to clean their dryer vents.

Luke's motto is that "safety never takes a day off." He really believes this and is passionate about helping the community (and its furry companions)! I forgot to mention that Luke loves animals and someday love to take over an animal shelter to properly care for them!

Here are some facts about dryer vent cleaning, provided by Lee County's very own Luke Rodrigues Dryer Vent Cleaning.

What does the dryer vent cleaning process entail?

  1. Unplug and unhook the dryer to access the back/vent
  2. Take a before picture
  3. Pull out any visible/accessible clumps of lint by hand
  4. Use a nylon bristle brush through the vent to clear out any blockages farther up the line
  5. Once cleared, use a stainless steel wire brush to gently polish (but not damage) the dryer vent
  6. Check the vent from the roof
  7. Remove any lint trapped in the vent
  8. Ensure the flap functions properly
  9. Ensure there is no mesh/screen that would create buildup
  10. Take after pictures
  11. Vacuum and clean work area and back vents of dryer with a HEPA filter
  12. Reattach the dryer vent and plug in machine
  13. Test the dryer to ensure it runs properly

What can you do regularly to avoid problems?

  • Clean lint trap after every use
  • Use light soap and warm water to scrub the mesh on lint trap as needed
  • Replace lint trap monthly or as needed
  • Cut down on dryer sheets and fabric softener - the mesh screens get clogged more easily with the added moisture from fabric softener
  • Don't overfill the dryer - this creates poor air flow/circulation and poor cooling
  • Recommend getting a dryer vent cleaning at least annually
  • If you notice something is not right, call Luke to check!

What have you found inside dryer vents?

  • rainwater blowing in, creating a sticky situation with mold
  • bird's and rat's nests
  • toothpicks
  • sunflower seeds
  • weather stripping
  • roofing nails
  • rings
  • and more!

What are some signs that the dryer vent may need to be cleaned?

  • clothes take longer than usual to dry
  • you notice burning smells
  • the dryer automatically shuts off, or doesn't start
  • the dryer is hot to the tough or the laundry room feels warmer than usual
  • clothes come out extra hot
  • clothes come out with wrinkles
  • lint is building up on the walls
  • there's a moldy smell in the room
