Be sure to follow proper etiquette when bringing your pooch to dine with you in public. Here are a few tips to help you get the most of your dog's day out:
- Call the restaurant ahead of time to verify that it is ok for Fluffy to come with you. Ask what they offer -- do you have to bring your own doggie bowl?
- If the outdoor seating isn't shaded, it may be a good idea to bring a blanket for them to lay on, to avoid the hot cement!
- Don't let your dog lick your plate! This is not good hygienic practice, even if the dishes are scrubbed and sanitized.
- Don't let your dog sit on the table or chairs. Again, this is not sanitary.
- Go during an off-peak time, such as after the lunch rush, and after a potty break.
- Make sure your pup is licensed and up to date on required vaccinations
- Use a harness and a short leash, when possible. This can help you control your pup should an emergency situation arise.
- Don't tie the leash to furniture -- if Fluffy decides to chase a squirrel, he could take the whole bistro set with him! Have you seen Beethoven? Let just not...
- Bring a comfort toy for him to play with while you're enjoying your meal.
- If you have a large breed dog, maybe take him to a restaurant with ample space between tables, instead of the close quarters café
- If you can, pick a table in the corner of the patio; this will offer much less stimulation for your pup!
- Avoid sitting by children (other than your own). They may get too excited and cause reactions from your dog that you don't usually see -- again, over-stimulation.
- Feed your dog before you go, or pack treats to take, to prevent him from sneaking that piece of chicken off of your plate.
- Make sure your dog knows basic commands, such as: sit, leave it, and lie down.
