We Rock The Spectrum Indoor Kids' Gym

A Parent-to-Parent Review

By Arianna Dabu, Macaroni KID Fort Myers - Fort Myers Beach June 10, 2022

We were privileged to be able to visit We Rock The Spectrum (WRTS), an indoor kids' gym for all kids! When we say, "all kids," we really mean, ALL KIDS -- and this is what sets WRTS apart from other indoor playground facilities.  The gym is sensory-friendly, with so much for kids of all abilities to enjoy.  When you walk in, you are greeted by the kindest owners - Ashley and Colt.  They check you in at the front desk, where there is also a little shop area for sensory and child-friendly toys, such as the Melissa & Doug brand. There is also a seating area with bistro sets for parents to relax, have a snack, etc.

In order to enter the gym area (which is separated from the front door with a large gate), you will need to take off your shoes and place them in one of the many cubbies available. Parents must wear no-slip-grip socks (available for purchase at the front desk), and kids can go bare-foot or with no-slip-grip socks as well. As you enter the gate to the open play area, straight ahead you will see double doors leading to their party room area (yes, they offer private birthday party rentals)!  To the left, you'll see the toddler zone.

The toddler zone has toddler-sized activities and play materials.  My kids immediately ran to the clubhouse, complete with a door, windows, doorbell, mailbox, and phone! Next to that was a veterinarian station to mend stuffed animals' ailments. Does your child fancy grocery shopping? There's an activity for that! A mini checkout station for them to put groceries into their mini shopping cart, place them on the checkout counter, and even scan them for payment! There's a cooking station, a caring for baby station, fridge, and more!

Right behind the activity centers, there is an arts and crafts table with supplies to help develop their fine motor skills. Next, there are calming rooms (with doors) providing a safe space for children to calm down, if necessary. Walking further into the back of the toddler zone, you'll find a wide open play area with a mini-trampoline, mini-playground with slide, comfy building blocks, a wooden train track, and bins full of toys for the littles. The whole floor is a cushy/rubbery material to prevent accidental injuries as well.

Backing out the toddler area, we're back at the gym entrance gate.  We head into the other side of the gym, with obstacles and activities suitable for bigger kids. The first thing you'll notice is a geometric play structure for the kids to climb on, through, and under. Next to that is a section with a hanging obstacle course, special swings, "cocoons," and more. There is a section dedicated to little "gym equipment" for the kiddos as well: an elliptical, bench press, treadmill, cycle, etc.

Walk back past these three sections, and you'll find a wooden ladder and monkey bar combo, with a crash mat underneath for tumbles. There are some cushy soft obstacles on the ground to play in as well.  You've now reached the back section of the gym.  This section houses a rock wall and rope ladder (with crash mats underneath), a larger trampoline, and my kids' favorite: the zip line!  This was the coolest kid-friendly zip line I've seen at an indoor play area.  Kids can walk up the steps to a platform (about 4' above the ground?) and sit/hang onto a big bean bag that zips them to the opposite side of the gym, where they crash into a comfy padded square area. There are mats (in addition to the padded floor) under the direct path of the zip line, in the event that the child can't hold on all the way to the end.

Whew! That's a lot, isn't it?! Overall, we truly believe this is a safe place for children with all-abilities, just as it's advertised.  The equipment is all covered in padding, there are no sharp objects, there are calming rooms and swings that can reduce kids' feelings of over-stimulation. The kids all enjoyed each other's company, being able to play with a group and socialize, where they otherwise may not be able to have that same luxury. We would definitely recommend We Rock The Spectrum for all children, especially those in need of a sensory-friendly environment!
